Garry Southway 

Garry started his rugby career in the South Wales valleys playing for Ystrad Rhondda (currently WRU League 1 East-Central) as a teenager and young adult during the days of amateur rugby. At University in Portsmouth, he was a regular in the 1st XV and was honoured to captain the 2nd XV in his final year. After leaving the Rhondda Valley to live in Caerphilly he played for Senghenydd (currently WRU League 1 East) for a number of seasons before moving to the Caribbean and retiring from playing rugby in 2004, after enjoying a 25 year playing career at the grass roots level.

Garry is an IRB Level 2 Coach and has coached at International Level for the last 6 years at both age grade and Senior Level. He coached the Cayman Islands Men’s’ U19s for 5 seasons from 2010 to 2015 as both assistant coach and head coach. During that period the Cayman U19 team has won the North American and Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) regional championships 3 times.

In 2015/2016, which is a Rugby World Cup qualifying year, he has assumed the role of Assistant Coach of the Cayman Islands National Men’s team, assisting former Blue Bulls head coach Phil Pretorius, specializing in areas such as the set piece and continuity play with the forwards.

Garry is our Caribbean representative and frequently travels to around the islands of the Caribbean and the southern states of the USA.
